This program moves around the expression of intimate and personal emotions. Mompou, Roukens, Scriabin and Medtner each create a world of wonder in which they melancholicly reflect on colors, memories and impressions.
Impresiones íntimas is the first major work by the Catalan composer Federico Mompou, written between 1911 and 1914. Mompou was a master miniaturist. He was able to tell a moving and imaginative story with only few notes. His music is sincere and poetic.
The Summer Preludes by Dutch composer Joey Roukens is a piano cycle of twelve preludes and epilogue, which was written during the summer of 2020, one of those warm, capricious summers that we have been seeing increasingly often in recent years, with a long heatwave in August, but also with rainy, almost autumnal days. The Summer Preludes can be listened to as a kind of musical diary, in which each of the preludes is a reflection of a specific day or period during that summer.
Alexander Scriabin’s Five Preludes, Op. 16, composed between 1894 and 1895, are dreamy and colorful miniatures representing the height of his early, Chopin-inspired Romantic period. Characterized by delicate lyricism, harmonic wonder and emotional introspection.
With his Sonata Reminiscenza, Medtner caught a unique feeling of melancholy. The piece is in one movement and is built entirely around a beautiful opening theme. The music expresses a strange yet beautiful contradiction: a feeling of homecoming and a feeling of displacement.
