A captivating program with violinist Joris van Rijn centered on Ravel, Schumann, and Grieg combining the refined French Impressionist sounds with the deeply felt emotions of German Romanticism and the folkloric atmosphere of Griegs Norway.
Ravel’s early first sonata reflects the influence of César Franck and the harmonic language of Gabriel Fauré. Because Ravel was developing his own distinct modernist voice in his later years, he ultimately chose not to publish this student effort. However, the piece remains a fascinating look into his development as a composer and already forshadows his later masterpieces.
Prokofiev’s said about his dark and passionate 1st sonata: ‘the slithering violin scales at the end of the 1st and 4th movements as “wind passing through a graveyard”.
The 3rd sonata by Grieg is a powerful and mature work in which he combines Norwegian folk-inspired elements with the Romantic tradition.
