Ravel’s early first sonata reflects the influence of César Franck and the harmonic language of Gabriel Fauré. Because Ravel was developing his own distinct modernist voice in his later years, he ultimately chose not to publish this student effort. However, the piece remains a fascinating look into his development as a composer.
Schumann wrote his first Sonata in just a few days and has al that makes Schumann an exceptional composer: lyrical and expressive melodies, fiery passion and intense emotions.
The 3rd sonata by Grieg is a powerful and mature work in which he combines Norwegian folk-inspired elements with the Romantic tradition.
